Mercersburg is an independent, coeducational boarding school for students in grades 9-12, nestled in the agrarian valley of Pennsylvania’s Tuscarora Mountains. The design and renovation of Mercersburg Academy’s Main Campus Quad reinvigorates it as the physical and symbolic centerpiece of the Academy. While the design effort focused primarily on circulation and upgrades to pavings, the ability to re-establish a mature tree canopy within the Central Quad was of paramount importance. MVLA explored the role of the central space and its immediate adjacencies within the larger campus and region. Highlights included the re-creation of The Irvine Memorial utilizing its existing figurative sculptures while focusing on the quad and vistas to the historic chapel.
