Burbank Studios in Burbank, California is a legacy Hollywood studio center and home of the Former NBC studios. Master planned by Gehry Partners, Worthe Real Estate Group redeveloped the 1920’s and 50’s era Studios into a 35-acre state-of-the-art film and TV broadcast studio center.

While the majority of the property still remains an industrial film productions site, OJB has re-imagined the face of the largest and most central studio building on site, The Fairway building, into a 630 foot by 40 foot linear courtyard and garden and flex/work space. The linear space was broken into 8 programmed terraces which will house games, seating and dining areas, micro-lawns, and collaborative seating spaces.

The complete east face of the Fairway Building, formerly a covered loading dock, was selectively peeled pack to reveal the existing canopy frame structure sitting atop the elevated dock. The concrete dock was cored out to allow low-water palo verde an coast live oaks to sit flush within the space. More were added at-grade with the parking lot to lead guests and tenants into the space. A vertical vine cable systems support Jasmine vine greenscreens, offering a semi-transparent enclosure within the courtyard. A series rased decks stretching the length of the site provide a place to work or relax, while vibrant ornamental planting help create a microclimate which cool the space. Soft tree canopies contrast the industrial architecture overheadand and create a welcome respite from the harder surroundings.

The courtyards will serve as a breakout and collaboration space for the 3 tenants within the building and act as a social and visual hub for the 35 acre site. The courtyards are the first development within the site and will set the bar as the inaugural phase of the studio redevelopments.
