The Columbia Street Bikeway is the first completed section of the Brooklyn Greenway that permits the unprecedented sharing of sidewalk with bikeway while sensitively incorporating public art.

The bikeway and streetscape are designed for two speeds: the pedestrian and the cyclist. The pedestrian strolls through retail and residential areas along tree-lined sidewalks with continuous cobble bands. This permeable tree zone uses structural soil to promote tree health and stormwater infiltration. MNLA’s collaboration with artist Nobuho Nagasawa affords places for carved tree silhouettes in bluestone pavement. Dubbed Timecast, the work is a fixed marker of change that inspires pedestrians to consider their own presence over time. The bikeway design moves with the faster rhythm of the bicycle. Large patterns of colored granite bands combine with street trees to mark speed along the bikeway.
