The interior courtyard at 50 Avenue Montaigne is designed to be an experientially rich urban oasis that is best understood by moving through it, while also providing a visually stimulating view from the adjacent office building designed by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates. The design principles of layering, parallel composition, and axial ordering were serially applied to the landscape materials of stone, metal, water, European hornbeams, and espaliered lindens to create a modern garden that draws the viewer into and through its spaces. The three-dimensional spatial qualities of the landscape are rendered in a spare manner to create both an ambiguous sense of physical scale and an experiential intimacy, recalling the storied tradition of French garden design.

The design was completed in collaboration with Boston artist Judy McKee, who designed and oversaw the creation of the garden’s bronze feline benches. Sited on the roof of a garage, 50 Avenue Montaigne required multiple design innovations, including the creation of low-weight soil mixtures, a subsurface drainage solution, and a complex irrigation system.

50 Avenue Montaigne received a 1995 Boston Society of Landscape Architects Merit Award.
