On the northern edge of Harvard’s campus, a different kind of quadrangle was conceived. A modern research lab is carefully inserted into the quadrangle’s existing collection of contemporary architecture. The three sculptural concrete towers form a portico as an entry to the quad from Oxford Street. Integration of architecture and landscape was achieved through landforms and pathways that reinforce the arcs of the towers. A gently sweeping path rising through the quad provides pedestrian movement from beneath the portico. A single landform, inspired by the New England glacial landscape, forms the core of the quad. A birch grove inhabits the landform and provides areas for shade, passive recreation and summer performances by the adjacent music department.
