The University of Chicago’s main quadrangles – and the botanic garden they enclose – have long stood as the institution’s iconic heart. Yet over time, vehicular traffic had steadily encroached on what had been a peaceful pedestrian experience. Hoerr Schaudt’s design transformed the main drive within the quadrangle into a walkway, one that captures the historic flavor of the Collegiate Gothic aesthetic while improving access for people with disabilities. Moreover, the firm’s incorporation of custom-designed porous concrete and limestone pavers maintained an appropriate aesthetic that is also environmentally sensitive – adding a contemporary component to a historic setting.
