This terrace garden is an extension of a renovated penthouse in Greenwich Village, and a welcoming refuge from the city below. Responding to conditions of harsh wind and sun, the design provides shelter and highlights seasonal change. The garden extends the living area outdoors by framing a sequence of views and smaller spaces, using custom planters with grasses and shrubs of varying heights and textures. Native grasses rustling in the wind buffer the sound of traffic, while framing views of a nearby water tower. Small flowering trees frame midtown skyline views, and a sculptural black pine terminates the view at the corner. A low container of seasonal color forms a dramatic foreground to views of midtown from the study and dining room.
