Perched commandingly on an outcropping of the wooded limestone escarpment in the urban East Kessler neighborhood, this glass and steel home provides an opportunity for a small intimate courtyard in an unused void beneath the soaring structure. The site design refurbishes and heals the existing site around the home and extends the interior living space into a habitable outdoor room. Steep topography throughout the site is mitigated by large limestone connectors that ascend a planted woodland procession from street to structure until level ground emerges, revealing the hidden courtyard nestled under the home. Designed stone gabion walls provide additional privacy for the courtyard from neighboring properties. A small pond within the space provides reflective and auditory qualities of water falling from a pipe scupper extending through the stone wall.
