The focal point of this three-acre site is an early 20th century “cottage” that occupies the crest of a primary dune on the beach of East Hampton. The landscape commission began in 2004 with a masterplan for the grounds that included a series of garden rooms at different levels including a cutting garden, shrub collection, play lawn, entry sequence, parking court, and swimming pool. NBW began with an analysis of the topography and indigenous plant communities of the Double Dune typology found in the environs of East Hampton. Inspired by this study, the natural dune conditions were abstracted into formal gardens composed almost entirely of plants native to the shore. NBW designed the pool pavilions, gates and landscape structures, as well as a large edible garden.
