This landscape re-design for Wallace K Harrison’s summer house in Huntington, NY, was part of a larger historic restoration of the building led by architects Schappacher and White.

Terrain created a landscape framework for the entire property that included the restoration of two small courtyards, terraces and panels of plantings that built on the Harrison landscape plan and vistas through the buildings.

Terrain developed a material palette that used many of the existing Harrison materials and forms, while also adding contemporary additions that help knit the historic to the new.  These include zinc covered landscape walls with up-lighting and a new pool terrace using the white circular pavers of Harrison.  New plantings and trees were added to create a series of smaller landscapes throughout the expansive site.  A grove of Japanese maples form a four-season garden visible from three internal wings and log bed of flowering perennials and grasses form a dynamic landscape at the frond entrance. The landscape celebrates the modernist roots of the historic estate while continuing the spirit of Harrison’s continual process of design experimentation.
