In collaboration with the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), SCAPE designed the 103rd Street Community Garden to transform open space in a historically underserved neighborhood of East Harlem. SCAPE and NYRP worked together closely to engage the community in a design-build process that began with a public charrette and culminated in a “park-raising” day. Community feedback guided the design process and developed the four court programming strategy, which preserved and relocated plants and trees valued by the community. The project was built with almost entirely volunteer labor, on an extremely limited budget. Over a matter of months, volunteers came together to transform an empty lot into a veritable public commons complete with vegetable plots, refurbished basketball courts, an open picnic area, a playground, and two shade structures equipped with rain barrels that feed into an irrigation system. Since the community garden opened in 2011, it has served as a vital community asset with diverse programming for people of all ages.
