This re-envisioned garden aligns an architectural remodel with the magnificence of its context: a breathtaking sanctuary that protects vital riparian and wetland habitat near the headwaters of the Roaring Fork River. The design honors the native surroundings through the purposeful integration of exterior spaces that celebrate views, draw from a context-sensitive plant palette and incorporate revolutionary technologies to minimize environmental impact.

The existing, neglected landscape exhibited little relation to its spectacular context. Outdoor patios and decks were narrow and cramped, the planting design was dominated by a collection of haphazardly-placed spruce and aspen trees in inhospitable soils, and an extensive, non-native lawn suffered from insufficient drainage and poor maintenance.

The resulting design is the product of a five-year collaborative process between Bluegreen and the client where subtle manipulation of micro and macro topographic conditions yields a collection of view-capturing outdoor rooms that are connected through the repetition of refined hardscape and native planting materials. A minimalist palette of near-white to cream sandstone, black granite slabs and weathered steel weave their way through the landscape and communicate with materials and detailing reflected in the architecture. The planting design responds to the client’s modern art collection and was specifically drawn from the native palette of the sanctuary: large masses of blue and purple perennials create textural and harmonic volumes that allow wildflowers the same dramatic impact as graphic hardscape materials.

Below the surface, an extensive geothermal system comprised of dozens of deep ground wells efficiently heats the saline pool, spa and select hardscapes, while the pool acts as a heat sink to help cool the residence’s interior. Along with topsoil preservation, stormwater reuse and the development of an organic maintenance plan, environmental stewardship remains at the core of the design. In its re-evisioned splendor, Gratia surpasses expectations while remaining contextually rooted.
