The ski resorts of Blackcomb and Whistler were developed simultaneously. In 1977, the place that would become Blackcomb was just two trailers at the base of a mountain with spectacular potential for skiing. The entire area was called Whistler, after the sleepy village at the base of the adjacent mountain. Blackcomb was renamed after the ski mountain was developed and opened in 1980.
