Uptown Normal reflects this midsize American city’s unusual belief that sustainability should be integral to the revitalization of its downtown. Accordingly, as the centerpiece of Normal’s new district, Hoerr Schaudt designed The Circle, a roundabout intersection with a park at its center that naturally cleanses storm water from the surrounding streetscape through a series of filtration bogs. This creative storm water system returns the cleansed water to the site in the form of a fountain, and recycles water into an irrigation system for the adjacent streetscapes. The Circle is that rarest of public amenities – a water feature that can safely be enjoyed physically as well as visually and aurally.
