This Baltimore harbor site, the Frederick Douglass–Isaac Myers Maritime Park, is home to the Living Classrooms Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing unique educational opportunities for inner-city youths, was the location of the first African-American owned boat building operation in the United States. Ziger/Snead and MVLA worked together to design a setting for a contemporary building which respected the site’s rich and varied history of uses and was consistent with the working waterfront quality of Baltimore Harbor. The plaza surface reflects the palimpsest of various building foundation traces that have occupied the site.
