Inspired by Las Ramblas in Barcelona; students stroll along the pedestrian friendly Eastern Avenue, lined with a bold avenue of angophoras and punctuated with a procession of banded granite. The atmosphere is buzzing as students dash across the main axis from the Fisher Library to the School of Chemistry. This central corridor is the main connection between the north and south campuses, integrating the university’s mix of contemporary and classic architecture and brings unity to what was once a complex university setting.

Students and university patrons sit under the shade of the eucalypts and flame trees in the bio-retention gardens; that not only provide respite along Eastern Avenue but also harvest rain and stormwater from the site. The inclusion of a green roof over the Faculty of Law Building acts as a climate regulation medium for the building and reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect.

The design has successfully transformed the university from a predominantly vehicular-based campus into a space designed around how pedestrians move around the site, while respecting and maintaining elements of historical value within the site such as buildings, sandstone walls, entry gates and fences.

Turf Design Studio’s responsibility included the concept design, design development, documentation tendering, site advice, DA preparation and public domain works for the public domain and the new Law Faculty building.
