The 24-acre Tempe Center for the Arts site is located on the southern shore of Town Lake. The centerpiece of Tempe’s arts district includes a seventeen-acre community art park. The design consists of three distinct parts: a raised plinth comprised of formal gardens, outdoor seating and sculpture courts; and a passive open space connecting to the existing Tempe Beach Park and the regional multi-use trail.

The arts center buildings are organized on a parti reminiscent of Native American Cultures’ building forms. The “village” of theaters, studios and offices are shielded from the desert climate and exterior sounds by a large roof. The gardens similarly influenced Native American forms of “Kiva” rooms and Hohokum ballcourts. Large-scale, plant-patterned earth forms are abstractly reminiscent of the native Sonoran desert. Additional site composition influences include dramatic views to the geological formations of Papago Buttes and Camelback Mountains.
