A secondary quad adjacent to the campus central green had been segmented over time by random paths. To rationalize the landscape without over-determining its use, Hoerr Schaudt reorganized the circulation pattern to prioritize the most heavily traveled routes and shaped the earth in oval mounds to deter students from cutting new and disruptive ‘desire’ paths. In addition to creating an unusual destination for students wanting to relax on the lawns, our intervention restored ground-floor views from Mather Hall, which had been obstructed by a grade change.
