The Katoomba Civic Centre public domain upgrade was part of a project to form new connections, and upgrade existing links between Katoomba Street and the proposed Cultural Centre, to form a revitalized cultural precinct. The project is comprised of three main sections – the Civic Centre, the Civic Centre arcade and Froma Lane. The project upgraded existing public spaces associated with the connection, and renovated existing buildings. The resulting squares and lanes form the primary public space within the village, and as such is of key importance to the urban fabric of the local area.

Locally sourced sandstone is the foundation material of the refurbished terraces and square, incorporated into paving, steps and seating, referencing the layers of geology of the Blue Mountains. A challenge for the site was to work with the steep topography of Katoomba St, yet still provide and encourage easy access into the cultural precinct for all users, resulting in a broad and inviting stepped and terraced landscape.
