This unique property is situated at the end of a point in Fairfield, surrounded by water on three sides, with sweeping views of the Long Island Sound. The property was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, sweeping away the dunes and all vegetation. The client decided to re-imagine the property, beginning with raising the house and pool above newly established FEMA flood elevations.

We were called in to design a new pool and landscape that would re-connect the newly raised home with the sea level landscape, creating a sustainable, worry-free environment in this vulnerable coastal location. The new pool and spa, with invisible overflow edges, set in elevated ipe decks, with an adjoining lower level terrace. Custom stainless steel bars, designed to emulate typical beach dune fencing, float below, enclosing the pool at the beach level to maintain views.

A garden area was created with raised planters, anchored in, to allow storm waters to flow beneath them, sparing plantings that would otherwise be lost in storm surges. A shadier creek side garden provides respite from the sun with a “Nestrest”. It is planted with salt tolerant Serviceberries, Oatgrass, and Hydrangea. A dune front fire pit area completes the trio of lower level “outdoor rooms.” Beach access is provided from this area on a sandy path through newly constructed dunes that will protect the property from flooding. Dunes are planted with native beach grasses, native juniper, beach plum, bayberry, beach pea, seaside goldenrod.
